This collection is the artist’s personal exploration. Her effort to express and appreciate her own changing body after beating breast cancer provoked Villere to create her exquisitely emotional female figures. The forms also stem from her practice in appreciating and loving every body that has posed in front of her camera over the past two decades. Combining these two things—her experience and exploration—has produced magic in Villere’s fleeting female figures. With a focus on the emotion of her subject’s movements and exposed forms as opposed to facial expressions, Villere has tapped into her genius as a painter. While her nude figures may be interpreted as provocative, these bodies are meant to evoke power and transformation, a glow from within.

Villere’s Still Life works conjure parallel images of her figures, simulating her growth as an artist and her desire to express the beauty that she sees in these often edible objects. Her curiosity for interpreting these commodities lies in her process of wanting to bring life and character and playfulness to something as simple—and wonderful—as a clove of garlic.

To understand the true and technical form of abstract painting, Villere challenged herself to play with creating abstract art. After realizing there is actually no definition of a “perfect” abstract painting, the artist allowed the canvas to take control and watched it happen. By using color, shape and texture, Villere plays with imprinting character and definition to each of her pieces with a variety of mediums, including acrylics, pastels and spray paint. Possibly her most powerful abstract pieces are those that incorporate the unique application and layering of tape and textural paints.
